It takes a parish to raise a Sunday School, and it takes a Sunday School to grow a parish.
Our Sunday School program is growing, and we are pushing for a more child- and family-friendly environment. We create an inviting and safe environment for children where they may participate in programs designed to increase their knowledge and love of God and Jesus Christ, their church home and parish family.
St. Mary’s nursery is getting a facelift and is now better than ever as an inviting place for families to leave their precious children during the service.
The 3-5 year olds receive a brief and simple Sunday school lesson, usually targeting stories of Jesus and emphasizing God’s love. They then spend the rest of their time playing in our newly established children’s area, located in the undercroft.
The Older Children have been studying the major stories of the Old Testament. They are very receptive and have demonstrated that they are not only understanding the stories, but they are also retaining enough to make connections to the next story. They take periodical comprehensive “exams” to see how they are doing. There is no pressure from this and they seem to enjoy the challenge!
A new Youth Group is being formed at the church, so that our children feel comfortable and at home at St. Mary’s.
The children’s church group meets on the first Saturday of each month from 2:00-3:30 p.m. During the 90 minutes, children sing songs, listen to Bible stories, discuss the stories, participate in art and craft activities, and enjoy snacks. After the snack, the children return to the sanctuary and participate in Eucharist. Father Kevin discusses the meaning of the Lord’s Supper and the children recite the Lord’s Prayer. Older children are called upon to assist in the service and each child may partake of bread and grape juice. We often finish the day by playing outside.
